A Scrappin' New Year's Eve
Every year I have a dilema...what fun activities can our whole family do
together on New Year's Eve? Then a few years ago our family hit upon an idea that
has been a smash in our family. A family scrapbook night! What better way to cap off
the year just ending and look forward to the new one? Let me share some of the things we
have done and it might give you a few ideas to use in your own Scrappin' New Year's Eve.
We get ready for our night of scrappin' and fun days before it even
begins! I love to have my children make their own pages that night so a few days
before the event we make a trip to the scrapbook store and I let them pick paper,
stickers, die cuts or other embelishments that they just love. It gets us in the
spirit!
To kick
off our night of scrappin' and fun we all gather around the kitchen table and pull out the
scrapbooks. Oh the fun we have as we look at pictures and reminisce! We giggle
as we remember how we had an Easter egg hunt in the snow last year, laugh as we recall the
time Grandpa went down the water slide with us, and even agonize as we see the only
surviving picture from the wedding we attended (we took a whole roll of pictures before
realizing there was really no film in the camera and only had 1 picture that was on
another roll!) Too often we create these wonderful scrapbook creations and then
don't open them up and use them. New Year's Eve is just a great time to pull out those
scrapbook creations and enjoy them! This is a time where even, Dad or children who aren't
typically interested in scrapbooking can't resist getting involved!
Then we
break open the supplies and start creating our own time capsule pages. We let each
child create their own page, only giving as much help as they want. Even our 3 year
old has created her own! I have friends who's teenage boys love this too! This is such a
great time to capture everyone's unique personalities on paper. We always let them
coordinate papers and embellishments on their own, even if they don't appeal to us! If
they like it, go for it! Here are some ideas about things you can include on your time
capsule pages:
 |
Let them
do their own journaling if they can write or let them tell you what to write if they
can't. What a great time to capture their handwriting! |
 |
Younger
children or budding artists could draw pictures of themselves. Artwork is just as
fun as photos to include in scrapbooks. |
 |
Include
a "My Favorites" list, with items such as favorite foods, colors, movies, books,
subject at school, friends, tv shows etc. It is so fun to see how their likes change over
the years! |
 |
Break
out the scale and weigh and measure them. My children just love this. |
 |
Use acid
free ink pads and stamp their hands or feet prints. What better proof of their growth! |
 |
Let them
write a story about their most memorable events in the past year. You can include
any photos that you haven't scrapbooked with yet too. |
 |
Include some momentos
or pictures of their favorite things (you may want to color photocopy some of these things
before hand). For example, you could include a pokemon card, color photocopy of
their favorite music cd etc. Just anything that typifies them. |
