The author, Michele Abel - MichelAbel@AOL.com , March 4, 1998 The Art of Rubber Stamping second edition is the same as 1st The second edition of the Art of Rubber Stamping, Easy as 1,2,3 is just a very slightly updated version of the first edition, that is no longer in print! Although I doubt it will ever be a collectible, I probably have some of the first edition books. But, the second edition is prettier (it has a nice pink cover instead of white). --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Creative Rubber Stamping Techniques

From Booklist , September 1, 1998 There is no question that McGraw knows her stuff, especially since she has stamped her imprint on one how-to book already, Making Greeting Cards with Rubber Stamps (1997). And there is no doubt that her latest techniques, from embossing powders to wax seals, elevate the craft from a kids' hobby to more of a decorative art. In this sequel, she has identified eight techniques that will further distinguish stamping creations, each with at least two step-by-step programs and three or so pages of ideas with lengthy descriptions. Clear vellum papers and ordinary household bleach are among the other materials that lend different looks and finishes; recipes are also included whenever needed. Yet one question still lingers. How many handmade cards can one person actually use? Barbara Jacobs Copyright© 1998, American Library Association. All rights reserved

Although the expected is here (note cards, wrapping paper, boxes), so is the delightfully unexpected (a fire screen, a chef's hat and apron, a coffee table, ceramic dishware, candles), all of it attractively handled. The majority of the more than 40 projects are home-decor pieces, and there are also various clothing items and paper products, plus some nice children's items, presented with good step-by-step directions and clear color photos. The instructional emphasis is more on individual items than on whole rooms, but a number of photo spreads show fully coordinated effects, from walls to window treatments to bed linens to a hutch full of various accessories. --Amy Handy

Despite the plethora of available rubber stamps, there's nothing quite like being able to make your own in exactly the design you want. The emphasis here is on doing just that--out of rubber erasers, cork, fruits and vegetables, linoleum, polystyrene, sponges, wood, even crumpled paper--resulting in stamps that are not only unique but generally cost much less than the ready-made kind. Then use your one-of-a-kind creations to adorn vases, chairs, walls, pillows, containers, coasters, desk accessories, lampshades, and candles. The projects are easy and folk-art charming. --Amy Handy

Arts and Crafts Editor's Recommended Book: The relative ease and low investment that this craft requires attracts many beginners. But the burgeoning sophistication of stamps and related supplies (including a bewildering array of inks and embossing powders) has extended its appeal to experienced artisans and resulted in many advanced techniques, along with increased costs for materials. Fortunately, help is at hand in this wonderful book, which offers a lovely array of projects and thorough information on all the groundwork. Wisely avoiding the cutesy look to which this craft often succumbs, the author provides elegant ideas for rubber stamping gift-wrapping, stationery, home decor, fabrics, and plates, as well as a chapter on holidays and special occasions, supplemented by good, clear photos.

Synopsis:

Designing and decorating with rubber stamps is a fun and creative way to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary. With its beautiful illustrations and easy-to-follow text, this is the essential guide to the popular craft. Provides detailed lessons on materials and supplies, basic techniques and project design. 255 full-color illustrations.
